Problem/Challenge:
Career Planning
Other key words:
Personal Passion, career, calling
Description:

Many people reach a point in their careers when they want to reconsider the choices that they have made to date. The reasons for doing this can be many, and might include

  • a desire to find a path more in sync with their passion
  • a desire to explore their other talents
  • a need for more satisfaction in their lives

The desire to find our calling often arrives after a number of years "working". A calling has been described as something we bring TO our work vs. finding IN our work. At the same time, 90% of books on the topic of career focus on finding something outside of ourselves.

It is said that callings are uncovered, not summoned. If we’re waiting for a bolt of lightning, a phone call from God, we may be waiting for quite a while. Instead, we should pay attention to nudges in a certain direction, yearnings we notice, and other indicators of what it is. Far too often, it takes a crisis to reveal what we need to pay attention to. We should be doing what we really want to do vs. doing what others think we should be doing (or what we think others think we should be doing).

The information in this section will focus on

  • How to assess your skills, talents and gifts
  • How to find or cultivate work/activity that matters
  • How to discover or develop a career or job that is truly satisfying, deeply fulfilling while being consistent with each your values
  • How to overcome resistance and obstacles

Resources for addressing this challenge

1. Books/Tapes

Many people relate well to the written word presented in book form or to the audio version of a book. The books presented below relate to the topic addressed and should all be of value to those investigating this subject.

ROI analysis: Books and tapes typically offer a High Return On Investment. They offer the following advantages:

  • Inexpensive to purchase
  • High re-usability - many users of the same material are possible
  • Audio versions of books can be listened to during otherwise less-productive times such as driving, walking, jogging, exercising, house-work, etc.

Books and tapes should be selected based upon the delivery mechanism most suitable for each person. Some people are not avid readers, and the messages contained in a book may not benefit them due this incompatibility. Audio versions may be of more benefit for these people.

At the same time, books and tapes do not provide for an interactive session with someone prompting the reader/listener to advance or participate in the process. This can lead to a lack of action on their part. See other resources below which are more participatory.

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom
by Don Miguel Ruiz

Sit at the foot of a native elder and listen as great wisdom of days long past is passed down. In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Full of grace and simple truth, this handsomely designed book makes a lovely gift for anyone making an elementary change in life, and it reads in a voice that you would expect from an indigenous shaman. The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. It's the how and why one should do these things that make The Four Agreements worth reading and remembering. --P. Randall Cohan

I have read this book several times and find it is an excellent way to break through the clutter of conflicting ideas about how we exist in this world. The principles are easy to understand and the language is clear. I often suggest this book as a starting point for considering what we are focusing on, and why. It is not a book about career planning, but can help one focus on why we seem to be drawn into career paths which do not reflect what we really enjoy. R Vibert, Ed

The Hero Within by Carol Pearson

A modern classic of Jungian psychology, The Hero Within has helped hundreds of thousands of people enrich their lives by revealing how to tap the power of the archetypes that exist within. Drawing from literature, anthropology, and psychology, author Carol S. Pearson clearly defines six heroic archetypes--the Innocent, the Orphan, the Wanderer, the Warrior, the Altruist, and the Magician--and shows how we can use these powerful guides to discover our own hidden gifts, solve difficult problems, and transform our lives with rich sources of inner strength.

This book will speak deeply to the evolving hero in all of us and reverberate through every part of our lives. With poignant wisdom and prolific examples, it gives us enduring tools to help us develop our own innate heroic gifts--the Orphan's resilience, the Wanderer's independence, the Warrior's courage, the Altruist's compassion, the Innocent's faith, and the Magician's abiding power.

I participated in a workshop that Carol Pearson gave on Archetypes in January 2002. Within minutes, she was able to lead the group towards understanding what their personal archetypes were and why that was important to understand. In my case, I discovered that I was primarily a Creator. I have not read this book, but would be very surprised if it was not a powerful way to understand what drives us. R Vibert, Ed

In Whistle While You Work, Richard Leider and David Shapiro counter the clichéd query about what you want to be when you grow up with a more intriguing question: "What is your life's calling?" The authors define calling as "the inner urge to give our gifts away in service to something we are passionate about in an environment that is consistent with our values." Drawing upon psychologist James Hillman's metaphor of the acorn programmed to grow into an oak tree, Leider and Shapiro guide readers to discover their "core gifts" and the work they were born to do. Each chapter describes a conversation with a cabdriver in a different city to introduce a key idea about the process of heeding your life's calling. These lively conversations are followed by stories of individuals--from a Motorola executive to a building security guard--who have identified their calling. The stories are paired with bulls-eye exercises that allow readers to discover their calling. Tools include "calling cards" to identify core gifts, a "calling journal" and the "calendar/checkbook" exercise to align values with time management.

The book would have been strengthened with more narrative about the relationship between choosing a calling and maintaining a positive cash flow. Yet the clarity and conviction of its approach sets this book apart from other do-what-you-love career books. It is an eloquent and practical blueprint for being at home in the world by making a living with your uniqueness. --Barbara Mackoff

This book contains a number of interesting exercises that will help you narrow down the field to what you want to be doing at work. I rate it a 4 out of 5. R Vibert, Ed

Callings: Finding and Following an Authentic Life
by Gregg Michael Levoy

This is the first book to examine the many kinds of calls we receive and the great variety of channels through which they come to us. A calling may be to do something (change careers, go back to school, have a child) or to be something (more creative, less judgmental, more loving). While honoring a calling's essential mystery, this book also guides readers to ask and answer the fundamental questions that arise from any calling: How do we recognize it? How do we distinguish the true call from the siren song? How do we handle our resistance to a call? What happens when we say yes? What happens when we say no?

Drawing on the hard-won wisdom and powerful stories of people who have followed their own calls, Gregg Levoy shows us the many ways to translate a calling into action. In a style that is poetic, exuberant, and keenly insightful, he presents an illuminating and ultimately practical inquiry into how we listen and respond to our calls, whether at work or at home, in our relationships or in service. Callings is a compassionate guide to discovering your own callings and negotiating the tight passages to personal power and authenticity.

I read Gregg Levoy's book one year after participating in a very powerful workshop he led at the Business and Consciousness Conference in January 2002. As soon as I got out of the workshop, I went straight to the bookshop and picked up a copy of the book. This book was sold out within minutes - people were that moved by the workshop. This book is a virtual compendium of the philosophical aspects one should look into when you are searching for answers to where you should be going in your career, vocation, life. It contains quotes from many, many people on the topic, but does not contain worksheets or many practical suggestions. It does ask the big questions. I rate it 4 out of 5, because I like practical stuff. It does get you thinking and the book Whistle While You Work and/or a workshop would get you going. R Vibert, Ed

Gregg Levoy presented a condensed version of this very powerful workshop at the Business and Consciousness Conference in January 2002.
